Tracy wins a raffle!
In
May of 2007, Tracy went to the Welsh Motorcycle Show in Builth Wells
and won the raffle. The prize was "the holiday of a lifetime", a 7 day tour of Western Cape,
South Africa. What Tracy didn't mention, when called on stage to
receive the prize was - we didn't have a bike or license!

When we were contacted by the tour operator, David Grist of H-C Travel,
Tracy explained the situation and we did have the option of car hire
instead of the bike, but after talking it over we thought "what the
hell - let's go for it!".
I
had ridden bikes in my late teens - early twenties, but never
passed my test, so we both did our CBT in July, as I was pretty sure
I'd know as soon as I got back on a bike, whether or not I was going to
be able to handle the trip. The training went fine and after further
investigation we bought two bikes - a Suzuki Bandit 650SA for me and a
Yamaha YBR125 for Tracy. We picked up the YBR straight away and the
dealer, JT's Motorcycles Swansea, held on to the Bandit for me. There
were some delays in organising my DAS training, which set me back a
couple of months, but eventually got round to doing it with JT's
(thanks Andrew, Alan and Bob!) and passed the test on the second
attempt on the 21st November. By this time we had watched The Long Way
Down and I was bricking it! We went to the Bike show at the NEC on the
23rd. Tracy and the kids had their picture taken with Charlie Boorman
on the Tourtech stand and I was going to ask for some tips, but he
seemed a little busy! I picked up the Bandit and managed to get
1800 miles in over the winter, riding in all sorts of weather
conditions and on the 1st March we headed for Heathrow Airport for our
flight to Cape Town.
